As any holiday approaches, it's hard to miss the transformation of everything into shapes that embody the festive spirit. Whether it's stars and stripes cookies for Independence Day or shamrock-shaped pasta for St. Patrick's Day, brands are eager to align their products with the occasion. Costco, often at the forefront of these celebratory offerings, has brought back a longtime favorite just in time for Valentine's Day: heart-shaped ravioli.
Spotted by Instagrammer @costcobuys, the Nuovo pasta heart ravioli comes in a delightful four-cheese blend of ricotta, mozzarella, parmesan, and aged asiago cheese, priced at $9.99. Each container contains two 16-ounce packages featuring a mix of red and yellow heart-shaped pasta, prompting varied reactions from customers. "I'm sure [they're] with red dye chemicals. No thanks," expressed one dissatisfied individual. "Looks disgusting," commented another.
However, the heart-shaped ravioli also found its share of supporters, with many expressing excitement about its return and anticipating more holiday-themed items. "They are so good! Look for clovers for St. Pat's Day, too!" suggested one commenter on @costcobuys' post. "So festive!" exclaimed another enthusiast. For those seeking an affordable option for Valentine's Dinner, there are numerous ways to serve these heart-shaped ravioli to impress your loved ones.
How To Prepare Your Heart-Shaped Raviolis With Love
One of the perks of seasonal items returning year after year is the wealth of knowledge on the best way to cook and pair them. For instance, while Nuovo Pasta recommends boiling them in salted water, some commenters mentioned the ravioli falling apart too easily during boiling. A suggestion that emerged is to simmer the ravioli instead of boiling to keep them intact.
While some recommended Kirkland pesto sauce as a delicious pairing, Nuovo Pasta includes a sauce recipe on the back of the package, though it seems to change yearly. In 2019, a customer shared that it was an alfredo sauce made with ¼ cup butter, 1 cup heavy cream, ¼ cup parmesan cheese, and salt and pepper to taste. "So easy and so good!" they raved on the Instagram post. Nuovo's website lists the Valentine's Day hearts ravioli with vodka sauce, possibly the recipe on this year's package.
Unfortunately, some customers reported a shortage of heart-shaped ravioli at their Costco locations, with one person stating that employees suggested buying it online. For those fortunate enough to find them, pairing them with a cookie and cream mini cake could create a complete sweet and savory Valentine's Day meal.
